Endorsements!

October 19, 2019

I am very grateful for these endorsements!

Independent Weekly

“Some of these races lack the drama we saw in the Triangle’s largest city, but these towns are grappling with many of the same challenges—housing affordability, economic development, growth, traffic, and so on—and your vote will dictate the direction they take.

We did bone up on the choices facing voters in Carrboro: their survey responses, their endorsements, what our trusted sources tell us, etc. And ultimately, we believe we’ve selected the candidates who best align with our values and who will most effectively move these towns forward.

In this election, voters pick three aldermen from six candidates. Two of these choices are easy: Incumbents Damon Seils and Sammy Slade deserve re-election.Article

“The climate crisis is the defining issue of our time. Although teams of fossil fuel lobbyists in DC are working hard to undo previous federal progress, meaningful local action can be taken to help avert climate catastrophe. Indeed, there are critical actions that can only be taken by local governments, especially when it comes to land use and transportation policies.

Most local candidates have learned the basics and know the buzzwords, including prioritizing livability, bus rapid transit, and bike-pedestrian projects. In making 2019 candidate endorsements, the Orange-Chatham Group of the NC Sierra Club carefully selected candidates to whom a focus on climate change mitigation is a top priority, including candidates who: (1) truly understand how climate and environmental quality intersect with local land use, transportation, and housing policy, and (2) have reality-based solutions and the skills and determination to get them accomplished.

Sammy Slade started his Alderman service a decade ago, and has been a vocal leader on fighting climate change for the entirety of his time on the board. Sammy’s stated top priority for his next term is :  “…to create a 10 year climate emergency budget plan. The plan will be broken down per annual budget cycle, so that we can do our necessary part locally to meet our climate change mitigation goals.Press Release

NEXT Action Fund

We strongly endorse Slade for the following reasons:

  • Consistent and deep commitment to climate justice and sustainability
  • Liaison to Carrboro’s Climate Task Force that developed the climate action plan/voice for Carrboro having a climate budget
  • Commitment to a local living economy, building resilience for local businesses (sustainability + living wage)
  • Visible supporter of racial equity
